Unfortunately, the only way to adjust the spacing is with a clumsy slider that doesn't show the new value until you let go of the slider, so I could never get it right.

On my 15" MacBook Pro, I had a big gap down the right side where I wanted to put some more icons, but to do so I had to shrink the icon spacing slightly.
